Welcome to part two of "Spring Clean Your Way to a Happier, Healthier Life" written by Deb Findlow from our Parkers Swindon office. In part one Deb explored the many health benefits involved when giving your home a deep clean. Today, Deb teaches you how to tackle the chores while still having fun and turning an ordinarily boring task into something far more enjoyable for you and your family as a whole...
1. Even Small Efforts Make a Big Difference
If the idea of cleaning the whole house fills you with dread, start small and work your way up. Even tidying up one corner of a room can significantly de-stress you.
2. Make It Count As a Workout
Crank up the music and use the activity as a full body workout. Be disciplined and committed. Arnold Schwarzenegger factored cleaning into his life when he was training for Mr Olympia. "Our place was immaculate," Arnold writes. "We vacuumed regularly; the dishes were always done and the bed was always made, military-style. The more you do it, the more automatic it becomes, and the less effort it takes."
3. One Thing at A Time
Follow the rules of Mindfulness - "Do one job, and finish it. Don't start another until you're done." It's the complete opposite of multi-tasking. Concentrate on what you're doing. Give it your full attention. Being in the 'present' helps us approach aspects of our lives with less anxiety and stress.
4. Take Control
When you thoroughly clean your home, you are in control of your environment. The fact that you can move and change the interior of your home is very empowering.
5. Be Inspired/Get Creative
Take the time whilst cleaning to flex your creative muscles. In the words of Agatha Christie "The best time for planning a book is while you're doing the dishes."
6. Reward Yourself
Don't be ashamed to reward yourself for doing good work and organizing your space. Buy yourself something nice, or indulge in a naughty treat!
7. Feel the Love
The home is the heart of the family, so put your heart and soul into keeping it nice. Share the chores and be proud of your efforts as a family. Encourage each other. Helping with chores frees up more time to go out and have fun together. Or better yet, why not have fun whilst doing the chores. By regularly spending that extra time together, you can share special moments with the people you love the most.
"Happiness does not consist in pastimes and amusements, but in virtuous activities." - Aristotle.
True happiness should be found in conducting our everyday activities with faithfulness, character, virtue and love... not in looking elsewhere.
Top Tip - Spring is all about new life and fresh starts. Why not use the changing of the seasons to make a change in your environment? Get rid of things holding you back in life - gifts from an ex, old pictures, clothes you haven't worn in a while. Clear out the excess and if something no longer adds value to your life, let it go. Then CLEAN!
